MADRIGAL Madrigal is a course that emphasizes more advanced voice culture & technique, music theory, repertoire work, and interpretation. Madrigal is open to the most advanced and motivated vocal students and members are expected to participate in school and school-related performances. Admission is by audition, but it is strongly recommended that students first spend a year each in Concert Choir and Ensemble.
ENSEMBLE Ensemble is Lawrence High School's premier treble choir. This group is made up of hard-working, qualified students who demonstrate considerable vocal ability and motivation. In addition to performing in both the winter and spring concerts, Ensemble is often requested to represent LHS by singing at events throughout the community. Students work hard to become fluent in sight-reading, solfege, high level technique and music theory. Ensemble sings challenging repertoire from all time periods and backgrounds, usually in 3 or 4 part harmony. Admission is by audition only.
CONCERT CHOIR Concert Choir is Lawrence High School's foundation choir: fundamental to our program and focusing on excellent vocal technique and musicality. This course that is made up of students who possess a high degree of motivation towards singing. Basic music theory applied to singing and vocal techniques is stressed. Students sing a wide variety of music, and even arrange their own on occasion. Students are expected to participate in school and school-related performances. This course may only be chosen for a full year. No audition is required.
GUITAR 101 Guitar is Lawrence High School's foundation guitar course, exploring the elements of music, theory and technique using the guitar as our vehicle. Students can expect to play and sing on a daily basis, and guitars are provided!
MUSIC AND THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE This half-year course is designed for the student who is very interested in music but does not necessarily play an instrument or perform in a school music ensemble. This class is focused on developing an understanding of the role and importance of music in the lives of people around the world. Students will have the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills in response to various genres of music including popular, jazz, classical, folk, and world music. Students will also develop knowledge in the areas of music history, critique, aesthetics, and philosophy.
